Silent Scissors

Description

The colony’s seamstress, a woman named Dorothea who has never in forty years miscut a single seam, is found to have altered a garment she had no permission to touch. The garment belonged to a resident who has since left Lakeside Pines under circumstances nobody will discuss directly. What Dorothea cut out of that dress, and why, sets off a chain of disclosures that nobody at the colony is prepared for.

Silent Scissors moves between the present-day investigation and a series of quiet, carefully observed scenes from the colony’s past, stitching together a picture of what life at Lakeside Pines costs the women who give themselves over to it completely.

A mystery about precision, about the things we remove from the record, and about the seamstress who finally decided that some alterations could not be undone in silence.
